Graduate Certificate in Business Administration | MBA | MBA (Advanced)

The Griffith MBA is an advanced general management degree that offers some additional specialisations. This program is designed for middle to senior level managers. The vision of the Griffith MBA program is to develop forward thinking and responsible leaders. The learning goals of this program are as follows:

  • Develop leadership and strategic capabilities in a local and global context.
  • Effectively and persuasively communicate in an organisational environment.
  • Advance understanding and adoption of ethical practice, social responsibility and sustainability.
  • Develop the capacity to manage multi-stakeholder relationships.
  • Develop a higher level of knowledge in a specialised area.

As a twelve-course Master of Business Administration program, students will be required to complete a set of eight core courses designed to introduce students to threshold concepts central to effective business administration. Students are required to complete four specialisation courses designed to advance their individual knowledge and competencies in areas of management relevant to their personal goals.

Specialisations include:

  • Educational Leadership
  • Finance
  • Financial Planning
  • General Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Information Systems
  • International Business
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Sustainable Enterprise

Each specialisation provides additional insight that enables managers to interact in a cross-disciplinary role while building internal and external relationships and influencing resource allocation within the organisation.

The Graduate Certificate in Business Administration may be awarded after the successful completion of any four core courses (40 credit points) or equivalent.

Students entering the Honours stream will complete one Research Methods course and a Research Thesis (40 credit points) instead of a specialisation. These studies increase the competency of managers to utilise and evaluate the appropriateness of research results and to develop a greater understanding of the implications and application of research and also provide a pathway to research higher degree programs.

The International exchange component (40 credit points) provides an opportunity for eligible MBA students to obtain experience at one of Griffith's international partner universities.

Articulation arrangements

From 2008, this MBA program will articulate to the Master of Business Administration (Advanced):

  • MBA (Advanced) at Gold Coast [5163] or South Bank [5162]

To be eligible to articulate, a student must achieve a grade point average of 5.0 after completing the first 80 credit points of coursework in the Griffith MBA program. Students should also note that courses studied in the Griffith MBA program only will be considered when calculating the required grade point average.

Attendance

The Master of Business Administration is offered full-time and part-time on-campus at the Gold Coast campus. You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows.

As a full-time student, you will generally attend 10-15 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester. As a part-time student, you will generally attend 3-6 hours of scheduled classes per week throughout the semester.

Classes are scheduled during the evening throughout the week and on some Saturdays.

You will be classed as a part-time student if you are enrolled in less than 30 credit points per semester. International students must maintain a full-time study load.

International students must make themselves available to attend all orientation sessions commencing from day one of Orientation week. International students who cannot arrive in the country to begin studies by teaching week one must gain permission from the MBA Director to commence the program in that particular semester.

Career opportunities

These programs increase the competency of managers to evaluate the appropriateness of advice provided externally and internally and to utilise that information to make decisions consistent with achieving sustainable outcomes for multiple stakeholders.

The development of these cross-disciplinary skills will lead to a range of employment opportunities in public or private sector organisations with the specific opportunity depending upon the graduate's previous experience and area of specialisation within the MBA.

Graduate outcomes for each specialisation are outlined below:

  • Educational Leadership: This specialisation will engage students in studies about issues central to leading in educational environments. At the heart of educational leadership is a concern for learning - not only for students but also for professional staff. Courses are designed to concentrate on the capacities a leader needs if both students and educational organisations are to improve. While leadership for learning and improvement are fundamental to educational institutions, leaders need to know and understand the global policy context within which they are working as well how ethics and the law are implicated in their work.
  • Finance: Success in the finance industry requires an understanding of how to analyse specific investment opportunities and manage a portfolio of investments on a risk-adjusted basis. The industry is increasingly concerned with corporate social responsibility and managing ethical investments. The Finance specialisation increases the competency of managers to meet these concerns by supplementing the broad MBA core courses with specialised courses of relevance to the finance sector.
  • Financial Planning: The Financial Planning specialisation offered in the MBA has been designed to increase the competency of managers to utilise and evaluate the expert advice offered to them by financial and investment planners and advisers. It provides additional insight that enables them to interact in a cross-disciplinary role, while building internal and external relationships and influencing resource allocation, including sustainability and socially responsible investing, within the organisation.
  • General Management: This specialisation allows students to advance their management knowledge and competencies in areas that are specifically relevant to them. Students pursuing this specialisation will normally choose courses which cut across specialist postgraduate degrees and specialisations offered at Griffith University , subject to approval by the MBA Director. Students may select four courses comprised of any approved combination of postgraduate courses for which they have satisfied any prerequisites.
  • Human Resource Management: This specialisation increases the competency of managers to evaluate and utilise contemporary human resource knowledge and professional skills to enable them to specialise in human resources or work closely with human resource specialists in a broader role in the organisation. This specialisation covers all areas of human resource management, including strategy and HR, recruitment and selection and performance management. It encompasses the notion of cross-cultural and diversity management emphasising the concept of globalisation and corporate social responsibility. Graduates will exit from this specialisation with a comprehensive understanding of human resource management and productivity in a sustainable environment within a framework of corporate governance.
  • Information Systems: This specialisation will advance industry professionals' knowledge and skills in key areas of knowledge management, resource management, risk management and IT strategy. It also supplements corporate governance, project and change management and enterprise systems integration. These core competencies will ensure competitiveness in the modern global business environment. Completion of this program will ensure a broad management focused perspective on current and emerging information and communication technologies, and advanced knowledge and skills relevant to effective deployment. Graduates will exit from this specialisation with a comprehensive understanding of Information System Management within an environmentally responsible and sustainable framework.
  • International Business: Students undertaking this specialisation will appeal to organisations that require professionals with the knowledge to facilitate sustainable and responsible international business and trade practices in a dynamic global environment. This specialisation increases the competency of managers to utilise and evaluate the appropriateness of advice from international business experts. It develops competencies of managers to operate effectively in cross-cultural and transnational environments and to build internal and external relationships which influence resource allocation within the organisation. These competencies may be deployed in an environment of contrasting ethical perspectives, potentially impacting on multi-stakeholder relationships.
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management: This specialisation will increase the competency of managers in areas critical to the effectiveness of Logistics and Supply Chain Management. It develops competencies to manage relationships and information flows effectively and efficiently in order to meet customers' needs and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Graduates will be well equipped to apply their knowledge and skills confidently in the workplace.
  • Marketing Management: The courses in the marketing management specialisation are premised on sustainable and ethical practices which reflect and respond to the political, economic, socio-cultural and technological influences on contemporary organisations. The integrated teaching and learning curriculum designs in this specialisation increase the competency of managers to utilise and evaluate the appropriateness of advice of experts in marketing departments, marketing consultants, advertising agencies and media representatives. Overall, the courses in this specialisation enable graduates to understand stakeholder management, corporate social responsibility, and ethical and sustainable marketing strategies and practices which contribute to sustainable outcomes for stakeholders.
  • Sustainable Enterprise: Business now involves a triple bottom-line, where people and planet are important, not just profit. Concerns over global warming, climate change and social injustice indicate how critical it is for business leaders to be prepared for this new environment. This specialisation aims to create a new generation of business leaders who contribute to the creation of sustainable and inclusive markets by providing a framework for understanding the challenges and opportunities ahead. Students will learn how to manage business whilst creating a positive change in society through developing a better understanding of the role, dynamics and impact of corporations in the creation of social, environmental and economic value.

The Honours studies increase the competency of managers to utilise and evaluate the appropriateness of research results and to develop a greater understanding of the implication and application of published academic research. These studies also provide a pathway for MBA students to migrate to the PhD program. Upon completion, the graduate will be able to conduct and publish research in peer reviewed outlets.
